Canadá busca una 'alianza única' con la UE en medio de la escalada de la guerra comercial con EE.UU.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that Canada is seeking a "unique alliance" with the European Union — not full membership, but a deep partnership built on shared values and economic complementarity. The announcement came as Canada-US trade relations deteriorate sharply following the collapse of trade negotiations in late August.

Trade war tightens

The US has imposed significant tariffs on key Canadian sectors including steel, aluminium, and lumber, plus an additional 50% levy on some C$28bn worth of Canadian goods. Ottawa responded with retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on roughly the same value of American products. Carney has since promoted a strategy of building a "more independent, more resilient" Canadian economy.

Carney heads to Europe

Carney will travel to the UK and France this week, addressing the European Parliament in Strasbourg. His visit coincides with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's State of the European Union address. He will also meet UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham in Liverpool. "We share the same values. We have the same priorities, and we have very complementary strengths. We're stronger together," Carney told reporters in Toronto.

EU signals openness

According to the Wall Street Journal, EU officials have signalled openness to Carney's idea of Canada becoming an "associate member" of the EU. Carney's special envoy to Europe has been instructed to "scope out the most ambitious possibilities short of full membership". The deepening Canada-EU partnership is seen as part of a broader Western realignment away from reliance on US-led trade architecture.
