Ukraine's Deep Strikes, Russia's Drone Barrage

Ukraine escalated its long-range campaign against Russian energy and defense sites, striking the Syzran oil refinery and a drone factory in Taganrog overnight, setting both ablaze. Tensions also brushed NATO's edge on September 14, when a Russian frigate fired two signal rockets at a Danish military helicopter; Copenhagen summoned Russia's ambassador but ruled out invoking NATO's Articles 4 or 5. Russia hit back hard. Drones struck a gas station and warehouses in Kyiv, injuring one person, while a strike on Zaporizhzhia's power grid killed a utility worker and wounded four women, cutting power to part of the city. In Kherson region, a drone killed a 74-year-old woman. Amid the barrage, the UK announced funding for 32 mobile shelters to protect Ukraine's gas workers ahead of winter. Diplomatically, Russia's Sergei Lavrov accused Washington of abandoning the Anchorage peace framework, even as US envoy John Cole met Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko in Minsk. In Kyiv, the Rada voted 317-strong to dismiss Prosecutor General Andriy Kravchenko, who then accused Zelensky of pressuring him over sensitive cases. Brussels, meanwhile, is embroiled in a sanctions dispute: France wants EU sanctions on Alisher Usmanov lifted in exchange for an Azerbaijan prisoner swap, while Luxembourg warns it will seek the same relief for Mikhail Fridman if that deal goes ahead.
