Reports of QR code scams are growing rapidly as fraudsters develop increasingly sophisticated methods to exploit smartphone users during everyday transactions.
In one documented case, a victim was tricked into downloading a malicious application after scanning a fraudulent QR code, which then set up recurring monthly charges of £60 without the victim's knowledge.
Experts warn that fraudulent QR codes are being planted on legitimate payment terminals, parking meters, restaurant menus, and public spaces, redirecting users to fake websites designed to steal payment credentials or install rogue software.
Authorities advise users to check URLs carefully before entering any payment details after scanning a QR code, and to avoid downloading apps prompted by unexpected QR codes. Any suspicious recurring charges should be reported to the bank immediately.
