Spain Threatens Italy Over Ceuta Border Controls

Spain has threatened to retaliate against Italy if Rome fails to lift border controls that were introduced following a wave of migrant crossings near Ceuta. The Spanish government rejected what it described as Italian pressure on the issue, escalating tensions between the two EU member states.

The dispute over border controls

Italy introduced tighter border checks after a significant number of migrants crossed from Morocco near the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The Italian government said the measures were necessary to manage migration flows. Spain, which neighbours Ceuta, pushed back against Rome's decision, arguing the controls were disproportionate and affected bilateral movement.

Spain's warning to Italy

Madrid warned that it would consider reciprocal measures if Italy did not reverse course. Italy has firmly rejected Spanish pressure, insisting the border controls fall within national competence and are a lawful response to the migration situation. The standoff has highlighted ongoing divisions within the EU over how to manage irregular migration.

The Ceuta corridor has long been a flashpoint for migration from Africa into Europe. Both Spain and Italy face significant migratory pressures, but the two governments have clashed over how responsibilities should be distributed across the bloc.
