German federal prosecutors have opened an investigation after authorities uncovered a cache of two loaded firearms hidden in a Brandenburg forest, allegedly stockpiled by Russian agents preparing sabotage attacks on German soil. The find adds to growing unease in Berlin over covert Russian activity inside the country. Political turbulence is also building in the Balkans, where Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced snap parliamentary elections for 18 or 25 October, two years ahead of schedule. The move follows months of anti-government protests triggered by the deadly collapse of a train station canopy in Novi Sad, unrest that has repeatedly filled the streets of Belgrade and other cities. Meanwhile, in a rare piece of good economic news, listed German companies have collected more than 790 million euros in refunds for US tariffs after the Supreme Court ruled Donald Trump's additional duties unlawful. Logistics giant DHL alone recovered 416 million euros. On a different note, an international team led by LMU Munich has pinpointed nine specific barn bacteria that explain much of the so-called farm effect, accounting for roughly two-thirds of the protection against asthma and half the protection against hay fever seen in children raised around livestock.
