12 Killed in Russian Missile and Drone Strike on Kyiv

Russia launched a massive combined attack on Kyiv and its surroundings overnight on Thursday, killing at least 12 people and wounding 33, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Strikes hit residential areas and damaged a medical facility and an educational institution. A separate attack on the Brovary district killed one more person and injured another, while an industrial plant caught fire.

Day of Mourning declared

Klitschko announced August 21 as a Day of Mourning in Kyiv, with flags on all municipal buildings flown at half-staff. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the assault as a massive combined strike using various rocket types, cruise missiles, and drones, saying Russia had long prepared the attack to damage civilian infrastructure as much as possible. Zelenskyy noted destruction also in the Odessa and Chernihiv regions.

Ukraine air defense under pressure

The shortage of air defense missiles continues to take a severe toll. Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram that as long as Ukraine lacks sufficient missile defense, Russia will not seriously consider peace, and again called on allies to deliver Patriot interceptors. Ukraine is working on its own missile defense but urgently needs the interceptors from partners.

NATO neighbors on alert

The strikes also put neighboring NATO countries on high alert. Poland mobilized aircraft and activated air defenses, particularly in border regions. Romania reported that radar systems detected air targets near the Ukrainian border during the attack.
