27 Years Since Shevchenko's Goal Silenced Luzhniki and Knocked Russia Out of Euro 2000
Twenty-seven years ago today, Andriy Shevchenko silenced Luzhniki Stadium. On October 9, 1999, in a UEFA Euro 2000 qualifying match in Moscow before 84,000 spectators, Russia led Ukraine 1-0 when Shevchenko stepped up for a free kick in the 87th minute. His shot struck Russian goalkeeper Alexander Filimonov's hands and deflected into the net — an error that would haunt Filimonov for the rest of his career and cost him his starting position the following season. The 1-1 draw proved fatal for Russia in the group standings: France finished first with 21 points, Ukraine second with 20, Russia third with 19. Russia failed to qualify for Euro 2000; Ukraine advanced to a playoff against Slovenia but ultimately also missed the tournament. Shevchenko, now serving as president of the Ukrainian Football Association, has described it as the most memorable goal of his career. Among the roughly 7,000 Ukrainian fans in the stands that night was a moment of pure, improbable joy inside a stadium otherwise rendered silent.
