69% of Ukrainians Back International Competition for Prosecutor General Post

1 min read

A survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KMIS) in September 2026 revealed strong public support for reforming how Ukraine's Prosecutor General is selected. The poll found that 69% of respondents back holding an open competition with the participation of international experts, a process considered more transparent and merit-based than a closed political appointment.

Public Trust

Among those who support the international competition format, 56% indicated they expect the public's trust in the Prosecutor General's office to increase if such a process is implemented. This reflects broader concerns about institutional corruption and political influence in key judicial appointments in Ukraine.

Significance for EU Integration

The findings come at a critical time for Ukraine's European Union accession process, which requires meaningful anti-corruption reforms. An independent, transparent selection process for the country's chief prosecutor is seen as an important benchmark by EU partners.

Civil society organizations have long advocated for competitive and internationally monitored selection procedures for top judicial and law enforcement positions in Ukraine.
