Austrian Court Orders Two Ukrainians Held Until October 21 on Espionage Suspicion
An Austrian court has ordered two Ukrainian nationals to remain in custody until October 21 on suspicion of espionage, the newspaper Der Standard reported. Both individuals deny the charges leveled against them.
The detained pair includes UP journalist Tkach's cameraman Bondarenko, who was arrested during a dramatic operation in Vienna. According to earlier reports, Bondarenko was injured during the arrest, and Tkach himself was released after the Ukrainian consulate became involved.
The court's decision to extend custody until October 21 suggests investigators intend to pursue the espionage case formally. Austrian law permits pre-trial detention in cases where there is a risk of flight or interference with the investigation.
The case has generated significant diplomatic and media attention, with press freedom organizations calling for greater transparency from Austrian authorities. Ukraine's foreign ministry has been engaged with Austrian officials to clarify the legal basis for the arrests and to secure consular access for the detained individuals.
Both suspects have denied any wrongdoing. Their legal representatives are expected to challenge the detention order in the coming days.
