Ballistic Missiles Hit Kyiv Without Air Raid Alert — Air Force Explains

1 min read

Russia struck Kyiv with approximately six ballistic missiles on the evening of October 12, but no air raid siren was sounded before the impacts. Ukraine's Air Force acknowledged the failure, explaining that no data on launches from Russian territory had been received in time to issue a public warning.

Air Force statement

"At 22:10, the enemy struck the capital with approximately six ballistic missiles (type being confirmed). No information about launches from Russian territory was received, which is why an air raid alert was not declared in a timely manner," the Air Force said.

Kyiv residents reported explosions across multiple districts on social media, and emergency vehicles were deployed throughout the city. The absence of any warning before the impacts drew immediate public criticism.

A persistent challenge for air defenses

Ballistic missiles travel faster than cruise missiles and drones, consistently straining Ukraine's air defense network. Kyiv has repeatedly requested additional missile defense systems from Western partners to address this vulnerability. The city's military administration confirmed damage but had not specified its full extent by the time of the statement.
