Belgium produced one of the most dramatic comebacks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, overcoming a two-goal deficit to beat Senegal 3-2 in extra time at Lumen Field in Seattle on Wednesday. Youri Tielemans scored a 124th-minute penalty — the latest winning goal in World Cup history — to send the Red Devils into the Round of 16.
Senegal were the better side for long stretches, with Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr scoring to put the Africans 2-0 up with less than five minutes remaining. Belgium appeared headed for one of the tournament's biggest upsets.
Substitute Romelu Lukaku pulled one back in the 86th minute, bundling the ball home from close range after a scramble in the box. Tielemans then produced a glancing header in the 89th minute to equalise and send the match to extra time, silencing the partisan Senegalese supporters in Seattle.
With the match deadlocked at 2-2, Lamine Camara brought down Tielemans in the penalty area in the 117th minute after a VAR review confirmed contact. Tielemans stepped up coolly and curled the ball into the side netting in the 125th minute — the latest winning goal ever recorded in a World Cup match at 124 minutes and 44 seconds. Belgium advance to the Round of 16, where they will face Argentina. More World Cup 2026 coverage on our Sports page.
