Berlin Pride Attack: Suspect Identified After 1 Dead, 16 Injured

German police launched a manhunt Sunday for a 21-year-old man identified as the suspect behind a deadly vehicle attack on Berlin's Christopher Street Day LGBTQ+ pride parade, one of Europe's largest, drawing hundreds of thousands. The Saturday evening attack killed one person and injured at least 16 others.

Suspect: Abdul B.

The Berlin Police and Public Prosecutor's Office jointly identified the suspect as Abdul B. — using only an initial for his surname under German privacy law. Police released a photo describing him as slim, approximately 1.9 meters tall, black hair, wearing a black hoodie and white pants. He had been "known to police" and was believed linked to the "Islamist spectrum." Authorities warned: "Under no circumstances should you approach them — they may be armed and dangerous. Call 110 immediately."

How the Attack Happened

At approximately 10 p.m. on Saturday, a vehicle drove into a crowd in Berlin's Tiergarten area near the parade's endpoint. At least 16 people were injured, several with life-threatening wounds. Authorities also reported stabbings in connection with the attack. The rest of the day's celebrations were immediately canceled.

Chancellor Condemns Attack

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called it a "heinous act" on Sunday, writing: "People from all over the world were peacefully celebrating. They wanted us to treat each other with kindness and tolerance. This is an attack on our society." Authorities have not yet formally designated the incident as a terrorist attack, pending further investigation into the suspect's background and motives.
