Brazil Votes: Bolsonaro's Son Challenges President Lula in Tight Election

1 min read

Brazil held its presidential election Sunday with around 159 million eligible voters choosing between incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and challenger Flávio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently under house arrest.

"I can be calmer, more smiling, more composed and more moderate," Flávio Bolsonaro said when nominated as presidential candidate. "But the blood of Bolsonaro flows here." The 45-year-old senator from the Liberal Party promises to reduce social spending and take a harder stance against crime.

President Lula of the Workers' Party is seeking a fourth term. The 80-year-old wants to continue his course of social programs, public investment, and a stronger role for the state. Opinion polls showed both candidates close to 45 percent, with no one expected to win an outright majority in the first round — meaning a runoff election is likely.
