On August 26, President Volodymyr Zelensky had announced that Prokopenko would lead one of two newly formed troop groups in the Donetsk region.
In April 2025, Prokopenko was appointed commander of the 1st NHU Corps 'Azov'. The unit noted that under his leadership, it evolved from a volunteer formation into a professional combat force.
