The German Bundesliga, founded on August 24, 1963, marks over 60 years of professional football — a history filled with moments that have shaped the sport and stayed in the memory of millions of fans.

The Goalpost That Fell (1971)

On April 3, 1971, during a match between Borussia Mönchengladbach and Werder Bremen, a wooden goalpost simply snapped in two. Herbert Laumen of Mönchengladbach later recalled landing headfirst in the goal net after jumping for a header: he could not get out by himself. With no replacement goal and repairs failing, the match became the first in Bundesliga history to be abandoned. The result was awarded 2-0 to Bremen, and wooden goalposts were subsequently banned from the league in favor of aluminum.

The Penalty That Haunts Michael Kutzop (1986)

In 1986, Werder Bremen needed only a draw or win in their penultimate match against Bayern Munich to clinch the title. The score was 0-0 when a disputed penalty was awarded to Bremen in the 89th minute. Bremen's penalty specialist Michael Kutzop stepped up — and hit the post. Bayern won the title on goal difference the following week. In his entire career, he converted 39 of 40 penalties; the only one he missed was against Bayern, in the most crucial moment possible.

Schalke's Four-Minute Championship (2001)

May 19, 2001, is a date no Schalke 04 fan will forget. As Schalke won their final-day match, news spread — incorrectly — that league leaders Bayern Munich had fallen behind in Hamburg, meaning Schalke were champions for the first time in 43 years. Fans stormed the pitch in celebration. But then the stadium screen came to life showing the Hamburg match still in play: a late equalizer for Bayern meant Schalke had been champions for just four minutes and 38 seconds. Manager Rudi Assauer's response became legendary: he said he no longer believed in the football god. Schalke still await their first title since 1958.

On November 8, 1975, referee Wolf-Dieter Ahlenfelder blew the whistle to end the first half of a Bundesliga match after just 32 minutes — apparently losing track of time entirely.
