UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham set out a vision for a new approach to business and economic growth in a speech on Saturday, 13 September, arguing that Britain must undergo a fundamental cultural shift to unlock its economic potential.
Burnham said that too often British institutions, regulators and social attitudes have been an obstacle to entrepreneurship and investment. He called for a shift towards a culture that celebrates risk-taking, rewards innovation and removes unnecessary bureaucratic barriers. The Prime Minister pointed to areas including planning, financial regulation and skills as sectors where cultural and structural change is most urgently needed.
Burnham's speech comes as the UK economy continues to face pressure from sluggish growth, high public debt and the ongoing challenge of raising productivity. His Labour government has pledged to prioritise economic growth as a central mission and has sought to reframe its relationship with the private sector after a difficult first year in office.
Business groups broadly welcomed the shift in tone from the Prime Minister, though some noted that substantive policy changes rather than rhetorical calls for cultural change would be needed to make a material difference to investment conditions in the UK.
