Canada to buy PAC-3 and supply AIM-9, AIM-120 to Ukraine

President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed the details of Canada's latest air-defence package for Ukraine on Monday, 14 September, following talks with Prime Minister Mark Carney. Canada will purchase PAC-3 interceptor missiles for Ukraine's Patriot air defence systems, supply AIM-9 Sidewinder and AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, and help Ukraine secure additional air defence assets.

Package details

The PAC-3 interceptors are designed to engage ballistic and cruise missiles at range, significantly boosting Ukraine's existing Patriot batteries. The AIM-9 and AIM-120 missiles are compatible with NASAMS and other Western-supplied systems already deployed in Ukraine. Zelensky thanked Canada for the package, describing it as a response to the intensification of Russian air attacks on western regions of Ukraine.

Context

The announcement comes amid a sharp uptick in Russian drone and missile strikes on Ukrainian territory. Canada is among the NATO allies that have significantly expanded military assistance to Ukraine in 2026. Ukrainian air defences have been under pressure due to the scale and frequency of Russian attacks.
