CNN barred from Air Force One amid White House press freedom tensions
CNN was barred from boarding Air Force One on September 26, Ukrainska Pravda reported citing US media sources, in a move that press freedom advocates described as a significant escalation of the Trump administration's adversarial posture toward certain news organizations.
Access denied
The exclusion of CNN from the presidential aircraft continued a pattern in which the Trump White House has selectively restricted access for news outlets it considers hostile. The White House press pool has historically had guaranteed access to Air Force One, enabling journalists to accompany the president on official trips and report on his activities and statements.
Reporters Without Borders and other press freedom organizations condemned the decision, calling it an attack on a free press and a dangerous precedent. Several other news organizations expressed solidarity with CNN and called on the White House to restore full press pool access.
Broader pattern of press tensions
The Trump administration has frequently criticized CNN and other outlets such as the New York Times and Washington Post as purveying fake news and has taken various steps to limit their access to official briefings and events. Critics argue these moves amount to targeted retaliation against unfavorable coverage and violate the spirit of First Amendment protections.
The White House did not issue an immediate public explanation for the exclusion. CNN said it was seeking clarification and would continue to report on the administration regardless of the access restrictions.
