Colombia Earthquake Death Toll Rises Above 250 as Rescuers Race to Reach Epicentre

The death toll from Colombia's devastating magnitude-7.4 earthquake has climbed above 250, with authorities warning the figure could rise further as rescue teams struggle to reach isolated areas around the epicentre in Chocó department.

Rising casualties

At least 254 people have been confirmed dead, with 101 killed in Pereira and 95 in Cali, Colombia's third-largest city. More than 1,200 people have been injured and over 3,700 remain missing. The UN humanitarian office OCHA estimates that some 5,000 homes were damaged or destroyed across the affected region.

Rescue operation

The 7.4-magnitude quake struck on 10 August in Chocó department on Colombia's Pacific coast, and was felt across much of the country as well as in parts of Ecuador and Panama. Roads to some of the worst-affected villages have been blocked by landslides, hampering relief efforts. The Colombian government declared a national emergency and requested international assistance.

Broader impact

Buildings collapsed in Cali, Pereira, Quibdó and Manizales. Authorities have opened emergency shelters for thousands displaced by the disaster. President Gustavo Petro cut short an overseas trip to coordinate the government response.
