Dense Fog Blankets Kyiv: Yellow Level-1 Danger Alert Issued
On Saturday, October 17, dense fog descended on Kyiv and the Kyiv region, reducing visibility to between 200 and 500 metres. In response, the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre (Ukrhydrometcentre) issued a Level-1 yellow danger alert covering the rest of the day and the overnight period into the morning of October 18.
Traffic and Safety Warnings
Forecasters warned that the weather conditions could lead to disruptions in road and street traffic across the city and region. Drivers were advised to reduce speed, increase following distances and use fog lights. Pedestrians and cyclists were also urged to take extra caution in low-visibility conditions.
Duration and Forecast
According to Ukrhydrometcentre, the fog is expected to persist through the night and into the morning of Sunday, October 18. The alert level will be reviewed as conditions change. Dense autumn fogs are common in the Kyiv region, particularly during October when temperature inversions trap moisture close to the ground.
