Earth Is Heating Faster Than Previously Estimated, New Research Shows

A new scientific study has concluded that the Earth's surface temperature is increasing at a rate faster than previously modeled, accelerating the timeline for reaching the 1.5-degree Celsius warming threshold established by the Paris Agreement.

Researchers analyzed decades of temperature data, ocean heat content, and atmospheric measurements to arrive at a revised estimate of the planet's current rate of warming. The study found that existing climate models had underestimated feedback mechanisms, including Arctic ice loss and permafrost thaw, which are contributing to accelerated warming.

The findings suggest that the window for limiting warming to 1.5°C is narrower than previously thought, potentially requiring more ambitious emissions reduction targets to have any chance of meeting that goal.

Climate scientists called on governments to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels in response to the new data, while noting that even at the current pace, adaptation measures will be critically important for communities already experiencing severe climate impacts.
