Ebola Crisis in DRC Reaches Critical Point as WHO Chief Makes Second Visit

Two and a half months into the Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders has declared the situation more critical than ever. The virus is spreading at an alarming and unprecedented rate, raising fears of a rapidly deteriorating public health emergency across the region.

WHO Chief Makes Second Trip to the DRC

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus traveled to Congo for a second time since the outbreak began. During his visit, he toured Ituri Province, where nearly 90% of all confirmed cases have been reported, and held meetings with President Félix Tshisekedi in the capital Kinshasa. On platform X, Tedros called for a massive intensification of efforts to combat Ebola, stressing that healthcare workers urgently need protection, training, and support.

US Pledges Over $500 Million in Total Aid

The United States announced additional funding of more than $242 million, bringing total American financial support for Ebola containment in the DRC to over $500 million, according to the State Department. Washington also called on other nations to increase their contributions and commended Uganda for its decisive action in containing the outbreak near its border. The new pledges follow commitments made at the G7 summit in June.
