England to Open Walk-In Mental Health Centres for Immediate Support Without Appointment

The UK government has unveiled plans to open a network of walk-in mental health crisis centres across England, allowing people experiencing acute psychological distress to seek help without a referral or prior appointment. The initiative, backed by NHS England and the Department of Health, aims to ease pressure on accident and emergency departments, which have seen a significant rise in mental health-related attendances.

How the Centres Will Work

The new facilities, called Mental Health Urgent Care Hubs, will be staffed by psychiatrists, mental health nurses, and social workers. They will be available seven days a week and will operate alongside existing crisis telephone lines such as the NHS 111 mental health option. People in acute distress can walk in and be assessed within hours. Those requiring further treatment will be directed to appropriate inpatient or community care. The hubs will initially open in twenty sites across England, with plans to expand to over sixty within two years.

Growing Demand for Mental Health Services

NHS data shows that referrals to mental health services increased by 35% between 2023 and 2026. Waiting times for talking therapies have also risen sharply, with some patients waiting more than twelve months. Mental health charities praised the announcement but said chronic underfunding and staff shortages must also be addressed. The government has pledged an additional £500 million for mental health infrastructure over the next three years.
