EU Commission President: Europe to Fully End Russian Gas Imports by End of 2027
European Commission President announced that the European Union is on track to fully eliminate imports of Russian natural gas by the end of 2027. The statement reaffirms the EU's commitment to energy independence from Russia following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Since then, Europe has dramatically reduced its dependence on Russian gas, with imports falling from about 40% of total consumption before the war to single-digit percentages. The remaining volumes come through long-term contracts that will expire or be terminated by the target deadline. The EU has invested heavily in liquefied natural gas terminals and diversified its supply chains toward Norwegian, American, and Qatari sources. The phaseout is seen as both an energy security measure and an economic sanction against Moscow.
