EU Leaders to Call for Ban on Russian and Belarusian Symbols at Sports Events
European Parliament reports indicate that EU Council leaders plan to include in their summit conclusions for October 15-16 a call to oppose the use of Russian and Belarusian state symbols at sports and cultural events. The measure reflects the EU's ongoing efforts to maintain pressure on Russia and Belarus over the war in Ukraine.
The initiative is part of a broader EU effort to signal solidarity with Ukraine and to restrict the use of symbols associated with the states responsible for the invasion and occupation of Ukrainian territory. Both Russia and Belarus have been subject to extensive EU sanctions since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022.
The sports arena has been a particularly contested space throughout the conflict, with international governing bodies wrestling with how to handle Russian and Belarusian athletes. Some organizations have allowed them to participate under neutral flags, while others have implemented full bans.
By calling for opposition to Russian and Belarusian symbols at events, EU leaders are sending a clear political message about European values and the unacceptability of normalizing these countries while the war continues.
The measure is expected to have support from a majority of EU member states, particularly those in Eastern Europe who have been most directly affected by Russian aggression and who have called for the strongest possible measures against Russia and Belarus.
