EU Approves €3.2B for Ukraine Patriot Interceptors

European Union member states have approved a €3.2 billion exception to standard procurement rules, allowing Ukraine to buy US-made Patriot air defense interceptors. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the decision on Tuesday, September 8.

Von der Leyen Statement

Flanked by NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, von der Leyen welcomed the agreement: “Together with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, I welcome the member states’ agreement on the derogation for Ukraine to purchase critical goods for Patriot air defense systems. This will allow Ukraine to better protect its skies against Russia’s indiscriminate attacks.”

Funding and Timeline

The €3.2 billion is allocated from the broader €90 billion Ukraine Support Loan. Technical preparations are to be completed by September 11. Von der Leyen noted the sum adds to the €8.4 billion already disbursed, part of which had supported air defense purchases.

Broader Air Defense Push

The announcement coincides with Britain’s pledge of £100 million (roughly $135 million) for Patriot interceptors under the PURL initiative. European leaders have been working to strengthen Ukraine’s missile shield before winter, with further coordination expected at the UN General Assembly in September.
