EU Plans to Discuss Restricting Movement of Russian Diplomats
The European Union's Foreign Affairs Council is set to discuss tighter movement restrictions on Russian diplomats in EU member states at its October 12 meeting, though no formal decision is expected at that session.
The proposed measure would bar Russian diplomats from traveling outside their host countries, confining their activities to the country where they are accredited. This would represent a significant escalation of EU diplomatic pressure on Russia since the invasion of Ukraine began.
Currently, restrictions vary by EU member state. Some countries have already expelled large numbers of Russian diplomatic staff. A bloc-wide movement ban would standardize these restrictions.
Proponents argue the measure would limit Russian intelligence activities conducted under diplomatic cover. The discussion comes amid ongoing EU efforts to maintain pressure on Russia through sanctions, military aid to Ukraine, and diplomatic isolation.
