EU Condemns Russia's Nuclear Threats, Vows Not to Fall into Moscow's Trap

1 min read

The European Commission condemned Russia's nuclear threats against NATO member states on October 1, 2026, following reports that Moscow sent a letter to NATO warning about the potential use of nuclear weapons if Kaliningrad were threatened. EU Commission spokesman Christian Wigand called the rhetoric 'irresponsible.'

EU Response

'As for this message conveyed to NATO, let me refer to the clear reaction of NATO, which we welcome. And we of course condemn the irresponsible nuclear rhetoric of Russia,' Wigand stated. He added that the EU has no intention of helping spread Russian threats: 'The EU will not fall into the Russian trap, and we will not amplify the intimidation and fear tactics of Moscow.'

Lithuania's President Gitanas Nauseda separately commented that Russia's nuclear threats do not surprise him, noting that 'reckless statements are becoming more and more frequent.'
