European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has delivered a clear message regarding the future of diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war: Europe must have a seat at the negotiating table.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Kyiv alongside Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Kallas emphasized that any potential agreements brokered exclusively between the United States and Russia would be unenforceable without European backing.
During her address, the EU's top diplomat referenced an upcoming April 1 video conference between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and an American delegation. She addressed earlier remarks attributed to Zelensky suggesting that the peace process had stalled.
"Before this, he also noted that peace talks had reached a dead end. I think it is important to emphasize that much actually depends on Europe's support," Kallas stated. "Therefore, even if the US and Russia agree on something, they will not be able to implement it without Europe's participation."
She further stressed that accelerating the peace process requires acknowledging the EU's indispensable role. "The sooner the realization comes that Europe must also be part of these discussions, the better we will be able to move these negotiations forward," she added.
The push for European inclusion comes amid a flurry of recent diplomatic engagements. Key developments include:
Despite Kallas's reference to the negotiations hitting a "dead end," subsequent reports indicated that President Zelensky does not view the broader peace talks involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia as being at an impasse.
