German federal police (Bundespolizei) defused an explosive-laden drone discovered on a runway at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Saxony on Wednesday morning, triggering a partial closure of Germany's second-largest cargo hub and prompting an emergency response from the highest levels of government.

Incident Details

The drone was found early Wednesday on an active runway at the airport, which handles significant volumes of freight — including for major operators such as DHL and Amazon. Bomb disposal experts were called to the scene and successfully rendered the device safe. No injuries were reported. The airport resumed limited operations within hours of the incident.

Government Response

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt interrupted his summer holiday to personally address the incident, calling it a serious threat to critical infrastructure. He convened an emergency security meeting and pledged a full investigation. Authorities have not publicly identified a suspect or group responsible.

Foreign State Actors Not Excluded

German security officials stated that the possibility of involvement by foreign state actors — a phrase widely interpreted as a reference to Russia — had not been excluded. Germany has seen a marked increase in suspected sabotage against infrastructure over the past two years, including rail disruptions, pipeline incidents, and attacks on logistics facilities.

Calls for Better Drone Defences

The incident reignited debate about Germany's preparedness against drone threats. A prominent security expert criticised the federal government for insufficient investment in anti-drone systems for airports and other critical infrastructure, noting that many European airports still lack effective countermeasures.

"We have known about this vulnerability for years and done far too little about it," the expert told German broadcaster ARD. "A single drone can shut down an airport serving millions of passengers."

Leipzig/Halle Airport is one of Europe's fastest-growing cargo hubs, with capacity for over 1.2 million tonnes of freight annually. The incident is being treated as a criminal matter with potential terrorism and sabotage dimensions.
