FBI Data Breach: Agents Fearful as ShinyHunters Threatens to Publish Stolen Files

1 min read

Current and former FBI agents have expressed shock, fear and anger following a hack that appears to have exposed the private and personal information of the agency's entire workforce.

The hacking group ShinyHunters claims it breached FBI systems on Monday and is threatening to publish stolen databases and documents within four days unless its demands are met. The FBI acknowledged the breach on Wednesday, saying it was “aggressively investigating” how it occurred.

“This is really bad for our undercover agents,” said one former FBI cyber investigator. Staff are worried their personal information — including home addresses and contact details — could soon be accessible to criminals and hostile nation-state hackers.

Michael McPherson, a former FBI agent now at cybersecurity firm ReliaQuest, called it “a security threat which cuts to the core of agent safety, particularly their families.” He noted the breach reportedly includes home addresses that could expose family members normally insulated from professional risks.

Groups similar to ShinyHunters have previously been linked to swatting incidents and even petrol bomb attacks against law enforcement. One former agent warned that gangs could use stolen data for “violence-as-a-service” attacks targeting FBI agents who had investigated their cases.
