FIFA's Infantino Calls Emergency Summit Over Club vs Country Fixture Crisis

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has convened an emergency summit involving clubs, national associations, leagues and players' unions to address what he described as a critical crisis in world football's calendar management. The conflict between club and country has intensified significantly with the expansion of FIFA's competition calendar, including the enlarged Club World Cup and the additional international windows that have been added. Top clubs have expressed frustration at the increasing demands placed on their players for international duty, which they say is affecting player welfare and club performances. The European Club Association, representing the continent's biggest clubs, has threatened legal action unless significant changes are made to how the calendar is structured. Players' union FIFPro has also raised concerns about player workloads and the risk of injury due to fixture congestion. Infantino has acknowledged the severity of the situation and said finding a sustainable solution that works for all stakeholders is an urgent priority. The summit is expected to produce a framework for restructuring the international calendar by the end of the year.
