Finnish law enforcement executed a controlled explosion late Sunday night to neutralize an unexploded drone warhead that crashed in the southeastern part of the country. The incident, reported by police on Monday, followed a weekend of heightened aerial activity near the Finnish-Russian border.
According to authorities, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) went down north of Kouvola. Assessing that the device carried a live warhead, bomb disposal teams carried out a controlled detonation at exactly 23:26 local time on Sunday. Officials clarified that the loud blasts heard by residents overnight were a direct result of this safety operation.
The crash scattered debris across a wide area in the municipality of Luumäki. Throughout Sunday and Monday, the South-East Finland Police Department, alongside the Border Guard, conducted extensive investigations at the site. Authorities are currently working to determine whether the drone that landed in Luumäki partially detonated upon impact.
Security cordons remain in place north of Kouvola and in Luumäki to ensure public safety. However, the disruption to local residents was minimal. Jukka Lankinen, Chief Inspector of the South-East Finland Police, stated: "With the exception of two people, all those evacuated from the area were able to return to their homes for the night."
The airspace breach is closely tied to the ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe. Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo noted that the drones, which crashed on Sunday afternoon, were likely of Ukrainian origin. The trajectory aligns with recent Ukrainian strikes aimed at Russian military and infrastructure targets in the neighboring Leningrad region, which shares a border with Finland.
In response to the stray drones, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a formal apology to the Finnish government. Despite the cross-border incident, diplomatic sources confirm that Finland has not requested Ukraine to cease its attacks on Russian ports or other strategic targets.
