1 min read

Ukrainian emergency services announced on the evening of September 28, 2026 that the fire at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine building in Kyiv's Shevchenkivsky district had been extinguished. A Russian drone strike had set the building ablaze earlier in the day.

Casualties and Rescue

One person was killed in the strike — Nataliia Bukalo, an aide to the former secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council. Six others were injured. Two people trapped on the third floor were rescued using a ladder truck. As of the evening, search and rescue teams were still working through the rubble using engineering equipment in search of one person still unaccounted for.

At the Dobrobutt medical centre in the Holosiivsky district, which was also struck earlier the same day, rescue operations were completed. Eight people were injured at that site, with one person pulled out alive by emergency services.

Germany's Reaction

Germany condemned the strike on the Academy of Sciences building, which is located near the German Embassy in Kyiv. The German Foreign Ministry stated its position shortly after the attack.
