Five Teachers Killed in Thailand School Shooting

Five teachers were killed and more than 30 people injured after a 14-year-old student opened fire at Debsirin School, a prestigious institution in Nonthaburi, just outside Bangkok, on Friday morning.

Eyewitness Accounts

A seventh-grade student who was standing in front of her teacher when the shooting began told the BBC: She was talking to me when he showed up. The girl escaped by climbing over the school fence and said she thought she might never see her mother again.

An 18-year-old student told Reuters he initially mistook the shots for firecrackers: There were many shots: bang bang bang. Then it went quiet. Then it started again.

What Authorities Know

Police say the shooter stalked from room to room before turning the weapon on himself. Earlier that day, he had allegedly killed his grandparents. Investigators believe the 9mm handgun used belonged to his grandfather, who was a teacher at the school. Forensic officers noted the shots were quite accurate, with several hitting vital areas.

Calls for Gun Reform

This is Thailand's deadliest school shooting in years and the second at a school in 2026. In February, an 18-year-old gunman killed a headteacher and a student during a siege in southern Thailand. Four years ago, a 34-year-old killed 37 people, mostly preschoolers, in a nursery in Nong Bua Lamphu province. The attack has renewed calls for stricter gun control reform.
