France Boosts Protection of Saudi Arabia's Oil Route

1 min read

France is increasing its military contribution to protecting Saudi Arabia's oil shipping routes through the Red Sea and Gulf regions, Deutsche Welle reported on September 25, 2026.

The move comes amid ongoing threats to maritime traffic in the region, including Houthi attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea that have disrupted global shipping lanes since late 2023.

Context

The Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb strait are critical chokepoints for global oil supplies, with a significant percentage of the world's crude oil transiting these waters. France, as a permanent UN Security Council member and major military power, has sought to bolster its strategic presence in the Gulf and Red Sea region to ensure energy security for Europe and its allies. Saudi Arabia, as the world's largest oil exporter, has a direct interest in the security of these routes.
