France Intercepts Sanctioned Russian Tanker in Indian Ocean — Macron

1 min read

The French Navy intercepted the tanker DF Peak in the Indian Ocean on suspicion of illegally transporting Russian fuel in breach of international sanctions, President Emmanuel Macron announced on the social network X.

Macron's statement

"France is firmly committed to combating the shadow fleet worldwide. This morning, our naval forces intercepted the tanker DF Peak in the Indian Ocean, suspected of illegally transporting fuel," Macron wrote.

The so-called shadow fleet is a network of vessels — often aging tankers sailing under flags of convenience — that has been used since 2022 to circumvent Western sanctions on Russian oil and fuel exports. Western governments have stepped up enforcement efforts as Russia has relied increasingly on these ships to generate revenue from energy sales.

Escalating enforcement in global waters

France's interception of the DF Peak is one of the most high-profile actions taken against the shadow fleet in the Indian Ocean, extending enforcement well beyond European waters to major global shipping lanes. European nations have coordinated efforts to identify, track, and board suspected sanctions-busting vessels.
