France Issues Red Heatwave Alert for 49 Departments as Temperatures Near 45°C

A ferocious heat dome settled over France and much of western Europe on Sunday, pushing authorities to place 49 of France's 101 departments under the highest tier red heatwave alert — a designation that had previously never applied to nearly half the country simultaneously. Forecasters warn that Monday, June 22, could be the hottest June day ever recorded in France, with southwestern regions approaching 45°C (113°F).

Record Temperatures and Human Toll

Temperatures had already exceeded 41°C (105.8°F) in several areas by Sunday, and Paris was expected to see thermometers break 40°C for the first time in June. Seven heat-related deaths have been confirmed across France since the onset of the current heatwave, following 101 heat fatalities recorded in Spain in May. Schools in affected departments have closed, and dozens of train services were cancelled due to risks of track buckling.

Fête de la Musique Disrupted

The annual Fête de la Musique street festival, which traditionally draws millions of people outdoors on June 21st, was severely curtailed this year. The government banned alcohol consumption at outdoor events in all departments under red alert, and many local administrations cancelled gatherings entirely to protect public health.

Infrastructure Under Strain

The prolonged heat has placed France's power grid under unusual pressure as air conditioning demand surges. Rail operator SNCF suspended high-speed TGV services on several routes after tracks were found to be expanding beyond safe tolerances, and airports reported delays. Meteorologists say the heatwave, driven by a climate-change-amplified heat dome, is expected to peak on Monday before slightly relenting by midweek.
