Gasly Stuns Formula 1 with First Pole at Monza, Ahead of Russell

Pierre Gasly has taken the most unexpected pole position of the Formula 1 season, securing the front spot on the grid for Sunday's Italian Grand Prix at Monza with a stunning qualifying lap for Alpine. The Frenchman beat Mercedes driver George Russell by just 0.060 seconds, nine years after Gasly began chasing his first career pole.

Gasly's Historic Moment

Gasly has a particular connection to the Monza track: he won the 2020 Italian Grand Prix there while driving for Red Bull's junior team AlphaTauri, in one of Formula 1's great shock results. Now he has added the first pole position of his career at the same circuit.

"It felt like a very good lap. It has been nine years trying to chase a pole position and to take my first win here and then my first pole here is amazing," Gasly said after qualifying. He noted that Alpine had introduced a significant upgrade package at the previous Dutch Grand Prix, where he could only qualify 11th.

Championship Context

The result is a setback for Russell, who had been widely seen as the favourite for pole given that his Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli will start at the back due to a 30-place grid penalty for taking a new engine. Antonelli leads the Formula 1 championship standings and Antonelli's penalty presented Russell with a golden opportunity to close the gap — now complicated by starting second.

Russell acknowledged the result philosophically: "Massive congrats to Pierre because that's an incredible performance." He noted he had been caught in a tactical situation during the final qualifying run, where leading the group reduced the slipstream advantage that is particularly valuable at the low-downforce Monza circuit.
