German Meteorologist: AI Is Essential to Combat Extreme Weather

1 min read

With Europe experiencing a string of record-breaking weather extremes — from the 2024 and 2025 Central European floods to prolonged heat waves and unseasonable winter storms — a prominent German meteorologist at the German Weather Service (DWD) has made an urgent case for deploying artificial intelligence as a core tool in climate resilience planning.

The scientist argues that AI-driven models have already demonstrated superior performance in certain forecast domains, citing Google DeepMind's GraphCast system and Huawei's Pangu-Weather as examples that have outperformed traditional numerical weather prediction models in medium-range forecasts.

Beyond forecasting accuracy, AI can transform how early warnings are communicated and targeted, the meteorologist argues. Machine learning models can more precisely identify which communities face the highest risk during an approaching extreme event, allowing emergency management systems to pre-position resources and issue localized alerts.

The call comes amid ongoing debate about Germany's digital infrastructure readiness. Critics note that the country's comparatively slow digital transformation in public services means the systems that would be needed to act on AI-generated warnings are often not yet in place.
