Germany Backs International Criminal Court Against US Sanctions Threat

1 min read

Germany strongly condemned the latest US tightening of sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig said the Trump administration had triggered the next escalation step and vowed continued German and EU support for the court.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had previously labeled the ICC a 'rogue court' that Washington would 'cripple.' The US is particularly opposed to an ICC arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and to past investigations into alleged crimes by US soldiers in Afghanistan. The ICC's former judge Navi Pillay was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize the previous day.

The confrontation marks a widening rift between the US and its European allies over international institutions and accountability mechanisms, with Germany and the EU asserting that the ICC's mandate to prosecute war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide must be protected from political pressure.
