Wave of Sabotage Hits German Infrastructure: 160 Attacks This Year

Germany is grappling with an alarming surge in attacks on critical infrastructure. This week alone, security forces have responded to incidents at power substations in Brandenburg and near Cologne, a grenade explosion at a railway station in Augsburg, incendiary devices thrown at a construction site in Munich close to defence companies, and a suspicious launcher device found at a substation in Dormagen, between Cologne and Düsseldorf, accompanied by a written claim of responsibility.

Scale of the threat

According to a leaked Federal Criminal Office (BKA) internal document, authorities have registered at least 160 potential sabotage acts this year, alongside more than 700 suspicious drone sightings. Investigators are working on the assumption that the Bergheim and Jänschwalde incidents are linked and constitute politically motivated sabotage. Two Bulgarian nationals were arrested in Munich after the attack near defence facilities there.

Experts warn of a new normal

Security specialists say fully protecting every element of Germany's sprawling energy and transport network is practically impossible. Polls indicate that public anxiety is rising in line with the frequency of reported incidents. Authorities urge citizens to remain alert without succumbing to panic, acknowledging that a degree of persistent risk may become an enduring feature of modern life in Germany.
