Germany Sees Surge in Conscientious Objectors: Over 12,000 in 2026

1 min read

Germany recorded more than 12,000 applications for conscientious objector status in 2026, the highest figure in decades, coinciding with the ongoing public debate over whether to reinstate compulsory military service. The sharp increase in objectors comes as the German government has been discussing plans to reintroduce some form of mandatory service for the Bundeswehr amid concerns about NATO's eastern flank and the war in Ukraine. Young Germans are increasingly filing objections preemptively, even before any formal draft has been announced. Critics of reinstating conscription argue that the quality of modern professional armies is preferable to conscript forces. Supporters, including some German defense officials, contend that a broader service model would strengthen Germany's long-term defense posture. The government is expected to make a final decision on the conscription question before the end of the year.
