Germany Investigates Two Rapid Substation Attacks as Sabotage

German authorities are investigating two rapid attacks on the country's power infrastructure as acts of sabotage. The incidents prompted terrorism investigations in Brandenburg and forced five lignite-fired power generating units offline near Bergheim, close to Cologne.

Explosive devices were discovered at the Jaenschwalde substation in Brandenburg, a critical node in Germany's eastern power grid. In a separate but simultaneous incident, five coal-fired power blocks at lignite plants near Bergheim were taken offline following damage to local grid infrastructure.

Germany's BfV and the BKA are cooperating on the investigation. The attacks come amid heightened concerns about infrastructure security across Europe.
