Walking beneath trees in Germany this drought summer of 2026, you could easily mistake the scene for autumn: dry leaves crunch underfoot, and entire crowns appear yellow or entirely bare in mid-August. The problem runs deeper than aesthetics. Urban trees act as natural air conditioners, keeping city temperatures down. If they perish, cities will grow even hotter.
When heat and water scarcity strike, trees close the stomata on their leaves to slow moisture loss — a protective reflex that also sharply cuts photosynthesis and nutrient uptake. Across Germany in 2026, extreme drought now reaches into deeper soil layers, making conditions particularly harsh for street trees. Rain that does fall mostly runs off concrete and asphalt into drains rather than soaking into the ground around roots.
A dense tree canopy can be up to three degrees Celsius cooler than the surrounding air, and perceived temperature directly beneath a tree can feel 10 to 12 degrees lower than in the open sun, according to Dr. Matthias Beyer, an eco-hydrologist at the Institute for Geoecology at the Technical University of Braunschweig. His research focuses on the water balance of urban and forest ecosystems. Tree-lined avenues act as genuine cooling corridors in overheated cities.
Trees planted within the last 11 years and with a trunk diameter below 25 centimetres are particularly at risk. They lack the deep root systems that help older trees access groundwater. These young trees need a minimum of 10 to 15 litres of water per day — roughly one to two buckets. Ideally, water two to three times a week with a larger volume, allowing it to penetrate deeper soil layers rather than evaporating near the surface.
Mature street trees require between 200 and 400 litres per week — far beyond what a household bucket can deliver. Pouring a bucket near the trunk does almost nothing, since root systems spread far beyond the trunk. Nevertheless, forestry scientist Prof. Jürgen Bauhus of the University of Freiburg urges citizens to try. Even partial watering amounts to emergency aid that can keep a stressed tree alive while underfunded city authorities focus on newly planted specimens.
Both experts stress quality over frequency: one thorough deep watering is far more effective than daily surface splashing. Create a shallow depression around the base to hold water. On very hard soil, slow-drip irrigation bags placed a short distance from the trunk help water seep steadily into deeper layers without pooling. Residents with collected rainwater from roof barrels are well placed to make a real difference for young trees in their neighbourhood.
