Germany vows to help UK rejoin EU if Brexit is reversed

1 min read

Germany would do everything in its power to help the United Kingdom rejoin the European Union if Britain decides to hold a second referendum on Brexit, the German ambassador to the UK Susanne Baumann told The Telegraph.

Statement comes after PM's Brexit hint

Baumann's comments came a day after the British Prime Minister indicated that the UK could hold a second Brexit referendum after consultations on new long-term relations with the EU. The ambassador said that for Germany, Britain is an inseparable part of Europe — of its history, its present, and its future.

Shifting political landscape

Support for rejoining the EU has been growing in British public opinion polls in recent years, particularly among younger voters. The prospect of a second referendum on EU membership would represent a historic reversal of the 2016 decision. Germany has consistently been among the most welcoming EU members when it comes to the idea of the UK returning to the bloc.
