Glave and Azu Secure Historic British 1-2 in European 100m Final at Birmingham

Great Britain claimed a stunning 1-2 finish in the men's 100 metres final at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham on Tuesday evening. Romell Glave, 26, won gold in a time of 10.09 seconds, while team-mate Jeremiah Azu crossed the line in second place in 10.16 seconds to take silver. The result came just 24 hours after Amy Hunt's gold in the women's 100m, giving Britain a remarkable sprint double on home soil.

Glave: a new European champion

Glave had previously won bronze at the 2024 European Championships in Rome, making his gold medal in Birmingham a significant upgrade. He became the sixth British man to claim the European 100m title — and just the third in the last six editions, following Zharnel Hughes (2018) and James Dasaolu (2014). Raising a finger to the sky in celebration, he declared: "Total domination."

Azu: from indoor to outdoor glory

Azu, the world and European indoor champion over 60m, improved on his 2022 bronze to claim silver. The pair trained together as part of Britain's deep sprint group. The result caused delirium among the home crowd at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium, even as the championships had faced criticism earlier in the week for empty seats at other events.
