Global Development Aid Falls Despite Growing Number of Crises

Global official development assistance declined sharply in 2025, recording the largest annual drop in the history of ODA statistics, according to Deutsche Welle. Major donor nations are cutting foreign aid budgets at a time when the number of people requiring humanitarian assistance worldwide is rising.

Germany, historically one of the world's top aid donors, has significantly reduced its development cooperation budget. The German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development faces cuts of nearly one billion euros compared to 2024, with further reductions planned for 2026. Humanitarian emergency aid managed by Germany's Foreign Office is expected to be halved by 2026.

Aid organizations warn that the funding gaps will cost lives and undermine long-term development gains in vulnerable regions, particularly in areas affected by conflict, climate disasters, and food insecurity.
