Godzilla Actress Kaylee Hottle Dies in Car Crash at 18

Kaylee Hottle, the 18-year-old actress beloved for her starring role in two Hollywood blockbusters, died Tuesday in a fatal car accident in Frederick County, Maryland, according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office. Hottle was known for her breakthrough performance as Jia, a deaf girl with a special connection to Kong, in the 2021 film "Godzilla vs. Kong" and its 2024 sequel "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire."

Details of the Accident

The Frederick County Sheriff's Office confirmed to media that Hottle was one of two passengers in a car involved in a single-vehicle collision early Tuesday morning. She was the only person in the vehicle to lose her life. A 19-year-old male driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities said excessive speed was "believed to be a contributing factor in the collision."

A Rare Talent and Deaf Community Advocate

Hottle was born into a remarkable family: an all-deaf lineage spanning four generations on her father's side. She was herself part of the deaf community and had become an advocate for deaf representation in Hollywood. Her casting in the Godzilla franchise was widely celebrated as a landmark moment for deaf actors in mainstream cinema.

In a 2024 interview on "Good Morning America," the young actress shared that her classmates found her film roles "super cool" — "they're seeing one of their friends on the big screen, and it's alongside Kong too," she said with evident delight.

At the time of her death, Hottle was a senior enrolled at the Texas School for the Deaf, which paid tribute to the 18-year-old in a statement Tuesday, calling her loss "tremendous." "Our hearts are with Kaylee's family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew and loved her during this incredibly difficult time," the school wrote.

Hottle's father Joshua confirmed his daughter's death in a Facebook video, filmed using American Sign Language as he prepared to board a flight to Maryland.
