Three pre-dawn firebomb attacks struck the residences of members of Greece's governing New Democracy party in Thessaloniki early on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, injuring five people — one critically. The coordinated attacks used improvised explosive devices made with camping gas canisters and took place between 4:00 and 4:45 a.m. local time.
Assailants targeted three separate apartment buildings housing party members. All injuries resulted from the third attack, during which cars and motorcycles parked outside were set ablaze. One vehicle reportedly belonged to parliamentary candidate Afroditi Nestora of New Democracy.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis described the incidents as a cowardly, terrorist and murderous attack, vowing perpetrators would face justice. Authorities launched a major investigation, examining links to leftist and anarchist groups that have historically used such tactics in Greece.
Such groups have long targeted politicians and businesses with improvised explosives, usually causing property damage with few casualties. Wednesday's attacks stand out for their human toll. Follow Politics for updates.
